Solenoid Valve Chemical Compatibility Guide.

General purpose solenoid valves for water, air and inert non aggressive liquids and gases work well with just about any type of solenoid valve material, however applications where slightly aggressive chemicals are used can be a major headache when trying to find compatible materials of construction for a suitable solenoid valve.
The problem has two sides, firstly and probably the simplest task is to determine a compatible solenoid valve seal material that is known to resist chemical attack from the applied media. Typical solenoid valve seal options include NBR, EPDM, FKM and PTFE however some solenoid valves can offer FFKM, Rulon, Silicone and Kalrez but these are typically quite expensive in comparison to NBR (Nitrile Buna Rubber) and other solenoid valve elastomer seals.
The second problem and the one that really can cause issues are the solenoid valve materials of construction. Typically there are choices of Brass, 304 and 316 stainless steel and various types of synthetic plastic solenoid valve body materials. However in the case of most standard solenoid valves without isolating or dry armature the media will come into contact with the working or moving parts of the solenoid valve armature assembly, which in most cases in manufactured from various grades of stainless steel such as AISI304 for the tube, AISI430F for the magnetic armature, AISI302 springs etc. So all these grades of stainless steel and every material of the solenoid valve construction in contact with the media but be compatible with the media being controlled.
Over the years we have gathered an extensive list of chemical compatibility for solenoid valve materials of construction that in most cases have been amalgamated from other trusted sources, but we cannot guarantee that these results are 100% full proof and so we also suggest that solenoid valve users check with their solenoid valve supplier before ordering.
A helpful hint in choosing the correct solenoid valve for any chemical is to ask the chemical supplier for their list of approved materials.
Otherwise we can suggest quite helpful solenoid valve chemical compatibility chart here.
